inspiration

happiness experiment

radio boy

a few weeks ago in a place i do not remember, i saw a photograph of ingo maurer standing in a studio. above his head, i believe it was a cadillac that was hanging upside down from the ceiling. one door was open, and parts of the car had been dismantled and reattached in random places. that photograph screamed in my ear. i spent the next week making these lamps whose inhabitants do things that might be a little dangerous. each lamp has some sort of circuit that would theoretically work, were it not made of jewels and porcelain and gold filled chain, and each inhabitant takes a chance in participating. i hope you will leave a little feedback.

Amy,

I found your blog through a link from Casapinka. These are awesome. Intriguing and entertaining.

These lamps go totally beyond being just lamps, don't they? I like how they're obviously contemporary, but they also speak about a much earlier time. Have you been checking out the Steampunk movement by any chance? I don't mean to lump your work in with the Steampunk aesthetic, but there is a connection of sorts, although your work is far more subtle.

Amy,

Came across your lamp experiments via decor8/casapinka. Uh, let's see, what to say about your "lamps"??? Oh, how about, "fantastic", "amazing", "art", "genius". I could go on but will stop before the sincerity of the compliment fades.

You've got a winner on your hands and one that many would likely pay a handsome penny. Keep us posted on possible purchasing. I, in the meantime, will be on the hunt for sofa change and small children's piggy banks!

I love the story these lamps tell. But isn't that what art is about in all its facets? I can imagine seeing one of these in someone's office or den, and the comments adn contemplations they would stir.
