paperwork

i like these works by andreas kocks. i can think of so many interesting things to do with the opus and the texture of the paperwork is great. the shadows are beautiful around the cutwork. just pretty.

beach craft

this shadow box was one of my beach projects. the sparkle barnacles and the smallest mussel shell took some hits in transit, but i brought home an entire suitcase of shells and rocks (more on rocks and shells later) so i will be able to fix it right up. and yes, there was more than a little eye rolling at the 49.7 pound suitcase full of rocks and shells, but see how i need them already? the swarovski beads are from my jewelry making days. i opened the shadow box to get sparkle pictures but it just doesn't translate. it sparkles in person.

my 375 dollar office

i stayed up half the night for the last 3 nights trying to get this together and this morning i am enjoying the fruits of my labor. my house became unbearably cluttered with my real work and my various projects covering the living room and kitchen table, so i finally succumbed and got busy. sad but true, we have been eating on the floor at the coffee table for months. 3 days ago this room was shoulder high stacked with boxes still not unpacked from our move last year. the only things that were not already stacked up in this room in boxes are the plywood on the plastic table and the shelves covering the storage wall. three cheers for organization. it looks better this way.



my desk is the plastic fold up banquet table and maple plywood we use to make the dinner table bigger at christmas. hubs cut the plywood to fit the plastic table exactly and was kind enough to belt sand around the edges so there will be no unfortunate snagging. sweet. i put a piece of 39 dollar plexiglass from the home depot on it for a smooth writing surface, which i will just replace it when it gets too scratched up. if you come for christmas, you may have to put your plate in your lap.



beaucoup stuff on the shelves from the home depot. this was 315 dollars. i put a section of closet organizer on the end so i could have some drawers. i have the long shelves stacked pretty heavy already and this is before the inevitable extra gobs of stuff that will be but there as the office swings into use. i figure for the 16 dollars the shelf itself costs, i can replace it when it gives out. the driftwood hanging from the ceiling and stacked in the umbrella stand are for the chandelier project i started in maine. more on that later.


the 15 dollar lamp i have carted around for 2 cross country moves. i finally replaced the socket and bought it a shade yesterday. i like it.



overworked assistants. the piglet is exhausted from filing. the closet behind him is floor to ceiling file cabinets.

after a long winded series of clicks i found myself poking around the new products at lalique. i was so excited to see this table and chandelier. and then i realized they were a necklace and a cake plate. i would have made them a table and a chandelier, but oddly enough, they did not consult me.


this would also be a drop dead gorgeous chandelier. i'm going to make one. stay tuned....

on vacation

a few weeks ago in a place i do not remember, i saw a photograph of ingo maurer standing in a studio. above his head, i believe it was a cadillac that was hanging upside down from the ceiling. one door was open, and parts of the car had been dismantled and reattached in random places. that photograph screamed in my ear. i spent the next week making these lamps whose inhabitants do things that might be a little dangerous. each lamp has some sort of circuit that would theoretically work, were it not made of jewels and porcelain and gold filled chain, and each inhabitant takes a chance in participating. i hope you will leave a little feedback.

the rocky coast

day after tomorrow i leave for the maine coast for three weeks. i can not even wait. it is my favorite place to be. last year i drew a few things to embroider but still have not stitched them up. the border above is indian paisley with a seahorse and shell instead of paisleys. i may add a delicate indian/hicks hybrid band on the top and/or bottom to beef it up. i hope i can squeeze in some stitching with my busy staring out at the ocean schedule. i will also take half a suitcase of assorted wire and thread and beads and glue and soldering iron type stuff just in case.




i changed my mind about the grass in the first version but i do like the blue and yellow fish...the koi were inspired by my mother-in-law's japanese garden.

i wrote an entry about e.t. wickham earlier this year and have recently taken a day trip to see his statues in person. it seems some have been moved down the road and are behind what looks suspiciously like someone's electric fence. hopefully this will save them from further desecration. as you see in the photographs, his hard work has been mercilessly vandalized, which really hurts my, and i am sure, countless others' feelings. only the angel at the family gravesite stands in it's original glory. that said, now that i have seen them in person i love them even more and i am irritated that i can not give mr. e.t. wickham a big hug.

i read somewhere that when asked in an interview why he built these statues, he said "i don't know why i did it. i just had to". i would say on average, even before i had seen them with my own eyes, i have thought/do think of what he said 3 or 4 times a week. every week. he had to build them. they were heartfelt. it does not get any better than that. and after we admired all the statues we could find, we drove down the road to the family gravesite and i told him so myself.

mr. wickham's grandson runs a wickham stone park website with intact photgraphs and history of the statues and of his granfather the artist. i enjoyed it front to back. i hope you will too.

i have been absent for ages in a heap of busy work days! when the smoke cleared a couple weeks ago, i fell into a fit of invention (preview above). over the next few weeks i will get myself together and back on track with my blog, where i will feature more of the projects i am working on. i hope you are all having a healthy, happy summer (or winter, as it may be)!
