moving from a very large house to a small house several years ago, i am a lover of dining room/library combination. i have some serious, chronic, book/periodical compulsive disorder that requires constant bookcase construction. now that i have moved again to yet a SMALLER house and have no dining room, i rent my papery friends an apartment across town at the u-store-it. soon i will post the built-in bookcases and china cabinets my husband built for the new petit maison.

I too absolutely love dining room/library combinations. Out of need that is what I have right now, but even in big homes I like bookshelves in dining rooms. Last year I attended a lecture with Michael S Smith and he told us that he often puts bookshelves in California dining rooms to get his clients to actually use the rooms. Maybe he was just trying to charm his Southern audience, but he added that Southerners are the only ones who know what to do with a formal dining room.
